Willem Korteling, 1889-1964, Still Life with Flowers, oil on canvas, 40 x 50 cm. The canvas has been restored and relined (reinforced with an extra canvas on the back) at my request. Here you can view a work by Willem Korteling at The Kröller-Müller Museum. Three Generations of Deventer Painters (The Historical Museum Deventer) Painting talent was abundant in Deventer during the 19th and 20th centuries, not least within the Korteling family. Patriarch Gerhard Korteling started a painting business in the Smedenstraat in 1839. His son Bartus Korteling was an inspiring drawing teacher for decades, including at the Deventer Drawing Academy. His son Willem Korteling, the third generation, was the first painter to make a living from his independent work. The story of the Kortelings shows how craftsmanship evolved into art. With a book, exhibition, and his own website, 2011 is set to be a true Korteling year! Willem (1889-1964) sketched away and painted numerous landscapes, still lifes, flowers, and many cows and chickens! Romanticism, Impressionism, the late flowering of the Hague School—all styles are featured in the Korteling exhibition! The richly illustrated book *De familie Korteling, kunst en ambacht* by Roel H. Smit-Muller provides a beautiful overview of all the Kortelings. The book is published by Uitgeversmaatschappij Walburgpers, is colorfully illustrated, hardcover, ISBN 978.90.5730.707.2
